The House of Estates, built between 1888 and 1890. A very beautiful, decorated building in the city centre of Helsinki, near the Senate Square. The designer was Architect Karl Gustav Nyström. This Neo-Renaissance building serves as a venue for meetings and official functions held by the Prime Minister's Office and other offices of the central government. The interior is renovated in 1988-1993 but the original stucco, marble and ornamental work in Renaissance and German Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) styles by ornamental painter Salomo Wuorio and his assistant C. Ehrling were cleaned and restored. The catering and in-house service is very polite and competent and the food is absolutely delicious. It is a great pleasure to be one of those who have had the chance to visit this place.

If visiting Helsinki you probably end up in the Senate Square. Go one block further, too, behind the Helsinki Cathedral building. There you find more these imposing historical buildings from the late 19th century. House of the Estates is nowadays used for government institutions' events. Security issues do not any more allow free access to visit the historical building. If you have a chance to do so, I recommend to use it. It is even more decorative inside than outside. Take a leaflet about the history of the building and events arranged with you and enjoy the beauty of it.

This building is one of the most decorated and beautiful facades in the city.

The building is one of the more decorative sort in the city, and there are a couple of others surrounding it as well. It has kind of lost the glow now that I walk past it almost every day, but when you really stop to look at it you can't help but wonder why no one builds like this anymore. A good place to shoot a couple of photos.
